Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why?
My dad is a self-made man who became a senior executive at Gillette. He is driven, but ethical and socially aware, and always balanced his career with his commitment to our family. He has provided a good guide to how I want to live my life.
What's been your most interesting job?
I ran a house painting and construction company in high school and college. I learned a lot about working with people, and I also learned that I wanted to work with my brain instead of my hands.
What books have had the most impact on you?
Huck Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition. The first taught me that wit and imagination are critical in my life; the second taught me the importance of a social conscience; and the third provided me with important lessons about leadership and getting the most from your team.
Can you tell us something about yourself that would surprise most people you know?
I was a professional soccer player and am a published poet.
